One Room Challenge Week 3: Garage Makeover - Surf Shack Mood Board

So I’ll be honest, this week I didn’t get that much physically done on the space. We’re rewiring our entire house, and I started two more classes at school: Drafting and Color Theory, so I’ve been posted up in the Airstream attempting to work off of my hotspot, while our entire house is in disaray. I’m realizing how hard it is on the brain, when you’re surrounded by chaos.

However, Now that our garage is starting to come together, I need to get going on the design. I’m aiming for a relaxed, casual space: raw natural wood, rich organic textiles, yummy worn in leather, airy lighting, and a laid back California surf vibe.

The space also had to be incredibly flexible. It needs to work as:

  1. Outdoor Living Room

  2. Guest Suite: So have a Sleeping Area

  3. Workout Space

  4. Play Room

  5. Entertaining: Kitchenette, Bathroom

  6. Storage: Surfboards, Clothing, Seasonal Decor

So I’m calling the space our “Surf Shack”. I managed to create this little corner though to hang out in this week while the electricians were in the house, and it gave me some ideas of how I want to design the space.

Strader’s surfboards have needed a better storage solution for a while, not to mention, they’re pretty, so I found these beautiful racks from Rado Racks in Colorado. Already they’re giving me that Scandi Surf vibe I’m going for.

Now let’s get to the decor.

DECOR

For Decor, I want to keep it super simple, a few large scale pieces, and probably some black and white prints of Strader and Coyote surfing.

Pray For Surf Textile | Etsy

I bought this PRAY FOR SURF tapestry in the 36 x 46 and dropped it off the other day at Michael’s to get framed. Crossing my fingers they can get it done quickly, but I think it’ll be beautiful in the space.

FURNITURE

When it comes to a sofa, I’ve been dying to bring in my all-time favorite Cigar Sofa from Article, but sadly it’s not available until February. Then I checked the sectional, which would be perrrfect for this space, and it’s not available until July 2022! Even though, some of these probably aren’t available until the end of time, I still have to show you my favorites,

Even though I’d really love to go with my dream sofa, a sleeper might be more practical. If we have guests, we can always throw them in the Airstream, but a foldout sofa in the garage might be a game changer too. Here’s the best ones I’ve found so far…

MY FAVORITE SLEEPER SOFAS

Axel Full Leather Futon

Folds down to a full-size bed

Of course I love the Axel, it’s aesthetically what I want, and I love how low key it is. I’m just not sure how actually comfortable it is to sleep on. They didn’t have the sleeper in the store so I couldn’t test it out, but they had the non-sleeper and it was gorgeous.

Una Boucle Sleeper | CB2

I’m really loving this one as a cool sleeper without looking like a sleeper. It’s on the smaller side too which could be a good thing, I could mix it with some rad leather chairs.

The James Sleeper Storage Sectional | Interior Define

The James is the latest Sleeper model from Interior Define. It’s super comfy (yes I sat on it), and I’m loving that you can store all of the bedding in the chaise. Genius!

Harris Leather Sleeper Sofa | West Elm

The Harris a great leather option. The only thing I didn’t love was how high the arms were, it seemed a little formal for such a relaxed space.

Harmony Sleeper Sofa in Performance Chenille Tweed, Storm Grey | West Elm

I tested this one out in the store, and I have to say it was one of the comfiest loungiest couches I’ve ever sat upon. It doesn’t look out of this world in the picture, but I swear it is.

Thorton Sleeper Sofa | West Elm

This one isn’t super fancy and only comes in this midnight color which I’m not obsessed with, but I do love the $699 price tag, especially for a garage couch. But I also feel like you’ll get what you pay for with this one. Probably wake up with some interesting back pain lol.

STORAGE

And since it is still a garage, we do need some storage. However, all storage I bring in, I want it to be beautiful. And I want everything tucked away out of site. I’m planning on using Ikea PAX ( If I can find any in stock in the state of California :), the birch surfboard racks and skateboard racks, and I’d love to do a little kitchenette with a few simple cabinets.
